At R10k, the Honor X9d 5G offers a compelling package, with especially the massive 8300 mAh battery really hard to ignore. Add to this some peace of mind thanks to its ability to take a knock; interesting AI features; a lovely 6.79” OLED screen; a decent camera system; loud speakers plus its stylish look, and you start to understand why the previous X9c sold 13 million units worldwide. Just to note, there is competition on the durability side now, with Xiaomi releasing their REDMI Note 15 Pro (R8 000) and REDMI Note 15 Pro+ (R11 000) locally, which features REDMI Titan Durability, although with smaller battery capacity.

So overall, to conclude, the Honor X9d is definitely not a phone for everyone. If you are someone who values durability, wants a long-lasting marathon kinda battery life, needs a nice display for watching movies/reels, and doesn’t really care much about cameras or heavy gaming, then this is actually a very good device. For those genres of users, the Honor X9d makes a lot of sense. However, if you are someone who plays a lot of games or is serious about camera quality, then this is definitely not the phone for you.

People who are used to flagship phones might turn their nose up at the Honor X9d, but that’s not who the X9d serves. Its over-the-top protections and durability make it one of the best-suited handsets for users who are comically clumsy or accident-prone. It can withstand some knocks or hot water, while also lasting a long time between charges. While it’s not an extremely powerful handset, there is merit in deciding whether a butter-fingered friend can even enjoy a high-specced device long enough to matter.Another thing we liked was its thin list of AI features.

Here’s our Honor X9d first look and unboxing where we share our first impressions of their titular tough phone of 2025. When it comes to crafting tough phones, Honor’s X9 series takes the cake with each successive generation becoming even more resistant to damage than its predecessors. The magic here is that they’re able to make it tougher while retaining a semblance of performance and functionality without compromising its design and ergonomics.Where last year’s Honor X9c was able to shatter ceramic tiles and hammer in nails, the new Honor X9d was demonstrated to be able to survive direct hits from a nail gun and a stapler gun, emerge unscathed from a gravel-filled cement mixer. The Honor X9d was even able to take a full-on direct hit from a plasma gun that blasted it with a high pressure cocktail of heat and expanding gasses at point blank range.

The Honor X9d is surprisingly handy despite having the largest battery I have ever seen in a smartphone. It's seriously impressive that, despite a huge 8,300mAh battery that wouldn't be out of place in an 8-inch tablet, the Honor X9d weighs 193g, and is just 7.8mm thick. This phone is built to last. Gone are the curved screen and back of last year's Honor X9c. Like almost every smartphone released in 2025, the Honor X9d sports a flat screen with flat sides, and curved corners. My reddish brown review unit has an old-school bling about it, though the dazzle of its gold frame is somewhat undercut by its propensity to garner fingerprints. The rear camera bump is refreshingly slim, and barely protrudes from the phone's flat vegan leather back.
