Asus Zenbook S 16 to bardzo dobrze wykonany komputer, z solidną, smukłą i atrakcyjnie wyglądającą obudową. Mocnym punktem jest doskonały wyświetlacz OLED, dobrze skalibrowany, zapewniający pokrycie praktycznie całej palety DCI-P3. Na pochwałę zasługuje olbrzymi, wygodny touchpad i komfortowa klawiatura. Atutem jest także bardzo mocny procesor, który z powodzeniem sprawdzi się w nawet wymagających zastosowaniach. Bez problemu można go polecić osobom edytującym i montującym wideo, grafikom, a także jako uniwersalny komputer do wszelkich zadań. Niestety tak wydajny procesor zamknięty w smukłej obudowie to recepta na kłopoty. W pełni obciążony laptop hałasuje. Nie jest to odgłos porównywalny do laptopów gamingowych, ale jednak uciążliwy.

Jest wiele powodów, dla których warto postawić na model ASUS Zenbook S 16. To wspaniale wyglądający i komfortowy laptop do pracy, który przepracuje cały dzień na baterii. Korzystałam z niego przez jakieś trzy tygodnie i niechętnie pakowałam go z powrotem do odesłania producentowi. Doceniam go nie tylko za aspekt wizualny oraz za doskonały ekran, dobry dźwięk, wydajność i kulturę pracy. Nie jest to sprzęt dla graczy, ale do pracy i korzystania z treści multimedialnych sprawdza się znakomicie.

ASUS Zenbook S 16 w prezentowanej konfiguracji kosztuje 8999 złotych (8499 złotych w wariancie z 1 TB SSD) i trzeba przyznać, że próg wejścia w generację AMD Strix Point będzie jeszcze wyższy niż w poprzednich generacjach. By cieszyć się wydajniejszym procesorem oraz zintegrowanym układem graficznym, konieczne będzie wyłożenie jeszcze wyższych sum pieniędzy. W przypadku ASUS Zenbook S 16 dochodzi kwestia kompletnie nowej obudowy i słynnego "podatku od nowości" i mamy nadzieję, że w najbliższych miesiącach pojawiają się dobrze znane obudowy laptopów, które także otrzymają procesory Ryzen AI 300, ale jednocześnie będą niższej wycenione. Sam notebook od ASUS prezentuje się ogólnie dobrze i gdyby nie kwestia mocno nagrzewającej się obudowy, byłbym skłonny dać ogólną rekomendację Polecamy. Tak jednak nie jest, więc musi wystarczyć Design, który w przypadku Zenbooka S 16 jest w pełni zasłużony.

Na minus można notebookowi zaliczyć dość niedojrzałe oprogramowanie i zarządzanie energią. Można to jednak zrzucić na karb tego, że mamy do czynienia z pierwszym laptopem z procesorem Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. Odpowiednie łatki software’owe będą zapewne dostarczane w regularnych aktualizacjach. Wystarczy powiedzieć, że podczas dwutygodniowych testów Zenbook 16 otrzymał dwie bardzo duże aktualizacje sterowników, w tym także tuzin poprawek od AMD. Najniższa jasność podświetlenia klawiatury mogłaby być rzeczywiście słabsza, a kamerka do wideokonferencji reprezentować wyższą jakość. No i ładowarka 65 W, podobnie jak sam laptop podczas ładowania, mogłaby się aż tak mocno nie grzać. Poza tym chyba mam do czynienia z pierwszym tak kompletnym Asusem, którego z czystym sumieniem mógłbym polecić “na teraz” – póki laptopy Copilot+ z ARM są jeszcze niedojrzałe i nie wszyscy deweloperzy postarali się o dostosowanie swoich aplikacji do wymogów nowego stylu Windowsa “na Snapdragonach”.

Asus Zenbook S 16 to piękny laptop, który również wiele potrafi. W urządzeniu kilka drobiazgów warto byłoby poprawić, ale i bez tego mamy do czynienia ze sprzętem wartym zainteresowania. I to nie tylko z powodu napędzającego go zupełnie nowego procesora firmy AMD czy sprzętowego wsparcia dla funkcji AI, co przekłada się na bardzo wysoką wydajność do większości zastosowań. Należy jednak przy tym pamiętać, że to nie jest komputer dla graczy. Oprócz świetnej jakości wykonania i użytych materiałów (z małym „ale”), otrzymujemy duży ekran z bardzo wysoką jakością obrazu, mnóstwo pamięci i najnowsze standardy łączności bezprzewodowej. Nie zabrakło tu również bogatego zestawu gniazd, przynajmniej jak na współczesne standardy.

I recommend the Asus Zenbook S 16 to users who want a premium, lightweight laptop that transports well and has a gorgeous OLED display. Visual creatives in particular, will gravitate toward this device. AMD's next-gen chipset provides solid performance, but it falls short in running as cool as other processors on the market, and its battery life is not the best. Prices for the laptop start at $1,399. It is a little expensive, although I'd argue it's well-priced for what you're getting. If you want something more budget friendly, check out the Asus Vivobook Pro 15 which is currently on sale for $899 ($400 off the regular price).

Frankly, I was taken aback by the ZenBook S 16. I did not expect a 16-inch Windows notebook powered by a traditional chip to be as slim, light, and portable as the MacBook Air. That alone is a major selling point, given that the AMD-powered notebook falls right in between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro. This isn’t a perfect machine, though. Its size and performance give the ZenBook S 16 an edge over the competition, even though the battery life may not surpass that of notebooks from Qualcomm and Apple.

In addition, its 3K 120Hz OLED panel offers the sacred blend of being responsive and detailed with gorgeous colours and contrast, as well as deep blacks. The 78Whr battery inside also offers solid endurance, too. Where competitors such as the Dell XPS 14 (2024) have caveats such as a shorter battery life or weaker performance, the Zenbook S 16 (2024) doesn’t.

AMD's first efforts in this sphere – the Ryzen Pro 7000 and 8000 series processors – were underwhelming, with performance from the chips' dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) topping out at a mere 16 Tera Operations per Second (TOPS). That's substantially lower than the 40 TOPS required for Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, and weedy compared to the 45 TOPS of the Hexagon NPU in the Snapdragon X Elite. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 promises significant improvements, with its NPU dishing out up to 50 TOPS.

The ASUS Zenbook S 16 (UM5606) combines tons of processing and AI power thanks to the all-new AMD Zen 5 CPUs with a dedicated NPU. Despite the thin profile, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 can sustain a 28W power limit plus ~2.70 GHz / 1.80 GHz clock for performance and efficient cores in long loads which is a good result for a machine that weighs a kilo and a half. The AMD Radeon 890M can show more than 40 FPS on Ultra details in games such as Far Cry 6 and Gears 5 which is a respectable score for an iGPU. The comfort under load is surprisingly good. The keyboard doesn’t feel too hot to the touch even when the CPU is loaded at 100% and the fans aren’t intrusive when the “Full-speed mode” or “Performance mode” mode is applied.

Creators will enjoy the colour accurate OLED screen on the Asus Zenbook S16, as well as that AMD Strix Point power. You've also got an excellent keyboard and some nifty AI features, ideal for video chatting and security purposes.

While there’s no question that the ZenBook S 16 is one of the slimmest and lightest 16-inch laptops on the market, we’re unsure about its real-life performance and its implementation of AI workflows. Everything looks good on paper so far–but things may change when it comes to real-life use. There’s also a concern regarding pricing: the starting price of the ZenBook S 16 is $1399 or around Php 83k converted–but that’s for the lower-end version with a Ryzen AI 9 365 processor, 24GB RAM, and 1 TB storage. We’ll not be surprised if the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 hits the six-digit mark, but we hope ASUS gives it a competitive price once it arrives in the Philippines.

AI might be the mot du jour at Computex 2024 (and every other launch event), but when it comes to producing a high-quality laptop, it’s the engineering that matters and, in this respect, the Asus Zenbook S 16 looks to have it nailed. We’ll have to see how the new AMD chips stack up when it comes to performance and battery life, but physically at least, this laptop hits the sweet spot. It has a large, practical display; it’s light and slim, yet stiff and robust feeling; and it looks the absolute business. I can’t wait to get one in for testing.
