So you get an A19 chip and all its computational benefits. MagSafe. A pretty innovative camera system, with great video capabilities, and a rather long-lasting battery. One could argue that the camera isn't high-quality enough – Honor and Samsung are offering a lot more (lenses and software) for roughly the same price. But the overall experience of the iPhone 17e is superior, in our opinion. It comes down to what you want from your budget phone. If it's a top-of-the-range camera with video capabilities, you would surely look at the premium models anyway. For those who want a cheaper way into the Apple ecosystem, or businesses that want to find quality handsets that their employees will actually like, the iPhone 17e is undeniably a solid choice.

Nothing is doing stirling work in proving that smartphones in 2026 don’t have to be boring and in the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is being generous in providing a telephoto camera for the money as well.

But it’s got a solid screen, feels good in the hand, and does those basics very well. If you don’t do elaborate photography with your phone, don’t play the most demanding 3D games, and don’t need the absolute fastest device out there, the iPhone 17e may be perfect for you. It would have been more compelling at $100 cheaper, better avoiding competition from phones that bring a bit more to the table in terms of performance, design, and photography, but it’s good to see a healthy base storage capacity for the money. From a photography point of view, only having one lens feels rather old-hat in the current climate, but on the plus side it does at least perform very well in most situations.I’d love to see Apple including two lenses on its budget model, saving the cutbacks for other things such as the screen and so on, but there we go – perhaps next year for the iPhone 18e that’s what we’ll get.

Apple has made meaningful upgrades over the previous generation – performance is up thanks to a faster chipset, battery life is noticeably better despite the still modest battery capacity, charging speed (both wired and wireless) sees some improvement, and MagSafe finally makes its way to the more affordable iPhone tier. Still, some of the compromises are hard to ignore in 2026. A 60Hz display that barely exceeds 1,000 nits feels outdated, charging speeds remain frustratingly slow, the single rear camera limits versatility, and the front design - with its large notch and thick bezels - looks well behind the curve.
