And I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The ROG Ally undeniably ups the ante, showcasing a more refined design, an operating system that's easier to navigate, and a superior gaming prowess. However, its price tag, which is twice that of the Steam Deck, puts it in the same range as entry-level gaming laptops, making it a tough sell for some. The performance it delivers is striking for a device you can hold in your hands, boasting an average 10fps lead over the Steam Deck. But it's not an open-and-shut case. The device has a hard time reaching frame rates high enough to take full advantage of the 120Hz refresh rate. Add to that, certain games like Returnal are unplayable, even with graphics settings dialed down. Additionally, the relatively short battery life is a concern, especially for a device that's designed to offer the convenience of portability over a gaming laptop.

The Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

ASUS Rog Ally X to świetna alternatywa dla tradycyjnej konsoli ale i dla komputera. Czy jest w stanie zastąpić nasze domowe urządzenia? Moim zdaniem tak, ale trzeba wziąć pod uwagę, że wiele osób ceni sobie granie na dużym ekranie. Sam fakt, że jest to konsola przenośna nie oznacza, że mamy grać tylko na baterii, bowiem ta wytrzymuje na najwyższym trybie do 2h. Jednak trzeba powiedzieć, że ASUS Rog Ally X podobnie jak laptopy, działa szybciej po podłączeniu kabla do zasilania. Nie jest to w żadnym sensie minus, bo w tej konsoli liczy się jej rozmiar, konstrukcja i możliwości grania wszędzie. Ja to doceniam w 100%.

Połowicznie wypada pochwalić także system chłodzenia, który bardzo szybko schładza podzespoły ze stanu wzmożonej aktywności i zapewnia dobre temperatury pod obciążeniem, jednak tylko wtedy, gdy nie jest podłączona ładowarka. Szkoda, tym bardziej że to właśnie z zasilaniem sieciowym handheld może w teorii osiągnąć lepszą wydajność, która niestety całkiem często jest zabijana przez wysokie temperatury przekraczające 90 stopni Celsjusza. W takim scenariuszu nierzadko spotkamy się z przycięciami animacji, które skutecznie psują rozgrywkę (dużo jednak zależy od tego, jak wymagający jest tytuł).

The one-two punch of performance and battery life is tempting, but not tempting enough to steer me away from a $549 or $649 Steam Deck OLED that will play my legacy library of Steam games more easily, then reliably go to sleep when I want to put it away. The customer support controversy is just one more reason to hesitate. But if you must have Windows or play the latest games on the go, the Ally X is the best Windows handheld yet. I hope it normalizes bigger batteries and VRR screens, and I hope Asus will seriously consider a SteamOS version, too. I hope to test it with Bazzite, an unofficial SteamOS clone, later this year.

And I have to give Asus some props for Armoury Crate SE, its skin and utility software. I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

A holistically better version of the 2023 model, the ROG Ally X is still a niche device at heart. If you want as much control over your portable gaming experience as possible, this is the best there is in Australia. Directly addressing the original’s pain points, the Ally X is easier to use and better equipped to handle the demands of modern gaming. In exchange for a higher price tag, you get more internal storage, a longer-lasting battery, and a better-quality design. If you already have the 2023 ROG Ally, however, these incremental yet meaningful improvements aren’t necessarily reason enough to immediately upgrade.

If you already own an Asus ROG Ally with a Z1 Extreme Processor, it’s not worth spending $799 for something with the same chip and panel unless you’re a huge enthusiast for this type of hardware. If this is your first device and you’re willing to invest $799, the Asus ROG Ally X is the best Windows gaming handheld available.
