Oprócz poprawionej ergonomii i lepszych joysticków, gamingowy handheld korzysta z dodatkowej pamięci, a także większej baterii 80 Wh.

Bardzo dużą zaletą jest również obsługa nośników SSD w formacie 2280, a nie stosowanych dotychczas w handheldach 2230, co znacząco obniża koszty ewentualnej wymiany. Połowicznie wypada pochwalić także system chłodzenia, który bardzo szybko schładza podzespoły ze stanu wzmożonej aktywności i zapewnia dobre temperatury pod obciążeniem, jednak tylko wtedy, gdy nie jest podłączona ładowarka. Szkoda, tym bardziej że to właśnie z zasilaniem sieciowym handheld może w teorii osiągnąć lepszą wydajność, która niestety całkiem często jest zabijana przez wysokie temperatury przekraczające 90 stopni Celsjusza. W takim scenariuszu nierzadko spotkamy się z przycięciami animacji, które skutecznie psują rozgrywkę (dużo jednak zależy od tego, jak wymagający jest tytuł).

ASUS poszedł w bardzo dobrym kierunku, decydując się na powiększoną baterię i nieco więcej pamięci. W obecnej chwili to konstrukcja znacznie dojrzalsza niż oryginał, ale kulą u nogi niezmiennie pozostaje sam Windows 11. Choć obsługa systemu z pomocą ekranu dotykowego nie jest wybitnie trudna, każda próba skorzystania z pełni możliwości sprzętu (czyli opuszczenie bezpiecznego środowiska Armoury Crate oraz Steam) będzie rodzić frustrację nawet u tych, którzy zjedli zęby na „grzebaniu” w systemach firmy Microsoft. Co chciałbym zobaczyć przy okazji ASUS ROG Ally 2? Z pewnością więcej mocy przy utrzymaniu tej samej wydajności na jednym ładowaniu. Oprócz tego porządną modyfikację Windows 11 dedykowaną wyłącznie temu sprzętowi.

Gdybym oceniał same starania producenta i efekt jego pracy, finalna nota Asusa ROG Ally X byłaby naprawdę wysoka. Niestety jednak, skupić się muszę na całym urządzeniu, również na tych aspektach, na które Asus nie do końca ma wpływ, jak chociażby działanie systemu Windows na tego typu sprzęcie, co leży już po stronie Microsoftu. Z tego też powodu nie mogę zakrzyknąć, że mamy do czynienia z najlepszą mobilną platformą do grania, ale daleko byłoby mi do odradzania zakupu tego sprzętu – trzeba tylko wiedzieć wcześniej, na co się piszemy. Nowy „Rogalik” to wręcz podręcznikowy przykład dobrego odświeżenia jakiegoś urządzenia. Widać, że firma przyjrzała się opiniom użytkowników poprzednika, wyciągnęła z tego wnioski, dodała parę rzeczy od siebie i w ten oto sposób stworzono fantastycznego następcę.

I also like that it now sports a more ergonomic button layout, with the back buttons being made smaller, which should help reduce accidental presses during gameplay sessions. Additionally, the analog sticks and face buttons are now positioned at a more comfortable angle, making it easier and more comfortable for gamers to move their thumbs between them. I wish ROG could have made more changes to the ROG Ally X, such as detachable controllers or a back stand, for example.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.
