The TCL 60 XE Nxtpaper 5G's star feature is its impressive Nxtpaper display. It’s bright, vivid, and easy to look at for extended periods of time. But today's phones need more than one killer trick. The 60 XE's performance is middling at best, the battery doesn’t last as long as it should, it will only get one system update, and the camera—despite its excellent macro mode—is decidedly average. Instead, we recommend the Samsung Galaxy A16, which costs less, performs better, and will receive years of support from Samsung.

The TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER doesn't really hold a candle to even some of the best cheap Android phones in terms of performance. However, standout features like the NXTPAPER display and Key make this worth considering for anyone who wants a comfortable viewing or reading experience. And at this price, it certainly beats buying a separate e-reader.

70% I Tested a $200 Budget Phone and It Didn't Make Me Look Like a Cheapskate

TCL has put together another impressive budget device, combining some features you'd expect from pricier phones with extra bells and whistles that feel special in a $200 product. The 60 XE's display is much like the 50 XL's, but its standout camera upgrade is the front-facing selfie lens. And what really sets it apart from other budget phones are the NxtPaper and TCL AI features. Unfortunately, the 60 XE's battery life can't match the Samsung Galaxy A15's. It also gets uncomfortably hot during mobile gaming. But its biggest drawback is still TCL's meager promise of just one software upgrade and two years of security updates. Both Motorola and Samsung have stronger commitments to support their budget phones, offering three years and five years of security updates, respectively.

I like the TCL 60 XE NxtPaper, but it’s not a phone I could use all the time. The handset’s Nxtpaper display feels nice, and I love looking at it, especially when I’m using the device at night, but it’s not something I’m 100 per cent sold on. Because of the phone industry, we’re all so used to how typical LCD and OLED panels feel that it feels unnatural when it’s a handset with NxtPaper technology, especially as a primary handset. Don’t get me wrong, with a 1080 x 2460-pixel resolution, watching videos looks good, Marvel Snap is fine too, and reading is fantastic, but still, not what I want to use all the time.
