Lenovo Legion Go S 8ARP1 to bardzo wygodny, świetnie wykonany komputer przenośny dla graczy z rewelacyjnym ekranem i świetną ergonomią, który jednak może rozczarować wydajnością w najnowszych grach. Nie uważam też, aby Windows 11 Pro był dobrym wyborem dla tego typu urządzenia – wersja ze SteamOS może sprawdzić się znacznie lepiej w rękach graczy. Osoba trzymająca przenośną konsolę do gier z wyświetlonym ekranem gry fantasy, na którym postać gracza stoi przed dużym, mitycznym stworzeniem na tle skalistej plaży i nieba z chmurami. Niemniej będzie to fajny sprzęt dla osób ceniących mobilność i prostotę obsługi, które preferują mniej wymagające tytuły. Sprzęt powinien sprawnie obsłużyć większość współczesnych gier przy średnich ustawieniach graficznych, jeśli jednak szukacie konsoli do wysokobudżetowych gier AAA na najwyższych ustawieniach – lepiej poszukać mocniejszej alternatywy.

Jest wydajny, ergonomiczny, wygodny w obsłudze, ma spory potencjał i daje bardzo dużo swobody, a przy tym wygląda dobrze, jest solidnie wykonany i po prostu przyjemnie się z niego korzysta. To nie zabawka, tylko pełnoprawny pecet w formie handhelda, który w wielu zastosowaniach może nawet zastąpić laptopa. Lenovo pokazało, że potrafi słuchać graczy i tworzyć coś, co realnie odpowiada na ich potrzeby, a nie tylko goni za trendami i stara się nadmiernie przekombinować coś, co powinno być z założenia jak najprostsze, lekkie i mobilne. I choć nie jest to sprzęt idealny, to w swojej klasie zasługuje na wysoką ocenę - solidne 7.5/10.

This is certainly a nuanced question, and it has an equally nuanced answer. I think the Lenovo Legion Go S is an excellent device, and I believe it’s most certainly a good value for those who are seeking a PC gaming handheld. However, whether or not you should buy it really depends on the version you buy. At a typical price of $829.99 for the model I tested, this is pretty expensive when a comparable Steam Deck is priced at $649.99. Mind you, the Legion Go S I tested has the same amount of storage, 1TB, no OLED display, and even similar battery life, even if the battery life is a little lower on the Steam Deck. With all of that being said, I think you should definitely buy the Legion Go S if you’re looking for a handheld, just not this model I tested, unless you really want to go with Steam OS and you want the most powerful option.

As I said in the beginning of this review this is my first time actually spending a long period of time with a gaming handheld. With that I don’t have a whole lot to compare the Legion Go S to. What I can tell you is that I have really enjoyed my time with this gaming handheld. I can see why these are so popular and why every brand is coming out with one. The ability to actually play AAA PC titles on a mobile platform that actually works well is a game-changer. Looking at the performance numbers they are not going to rival your desktop, but for pretty much any game out there you’ll be able to find a setting / resolution that is playable on a device like this. On top of that there was no having to go in and configure anything for controls, at least in the titles that I played everything just worked. The Legion Go S felt quite good in the hands and the controls seem to be just right as far as their placement goes.

Wrestling with Windows 11 on a handheld gaming PC is something I’d only recommend for the most patient of gamers. If you can, choose the SteamOS version instead, or install SteamOS on the Windows 11 model for a significantly smoother experience. Alternatively, wait and see how Microsoft plans on improving the Windows gaming experience with its Xbox-themed device later in the year. Because of how close the Legion Go S is to the Steam Deck in terms of performance, wait until a sale brings it below $1,000. Otherwise, its comfortable form factor and big screen are decent enough drawcards when paired with games that make the most of handheld play.

I actually quite enjoyed my time with the Lenovo Legion Go S, and I do think it is a solid gaming device, comfortable to hold and capable of playing brand-new games with ease on perhaps the best screen I've seen on a handheld. But in a world of increasing competition, it is tough to fully recommend a handheld that only offers its best performance when plugged in, and costs hundreds of dollars more than other portable gaming PCs that feature similar (or sometimes better) specs. However, if you can find a unit on sale (and I did fairly easily while writing this review), the Legion Go S is a perfectly fine handheld for those who are looking to primarily play games on a handheld console in their own home close to an outlet, or who have plenty of portable power banks on hand when out and about.

In the end, I thought that the Lenovo Legion Go S is a stark reminder of how ambition can be constrained by compromise. In its bid to offer a more affordable entry into the handheld gaming market, Lenovo perhaps cut too deeply by choosing the Ryzen Z2 Go processor and scaling back its design compared to the original Legion Go. Our benchmark numbers speak for themselves: contemporary games will struggle on the Go S, where the ROG Ally X and even the original Legion Go handle them with far greater ease. Its subpar battery life when gaming, sluggish performance, and lack of robust optimisation further distance it from the competition. While it aims to cater to budget-conscious gamers looking for a Windows-based gaming handheld, it simply doesn’t hold up against the stronger, more capable offerings from ASUS and even Lenovo’s own stable.

I really enjoyed playing games on the Go S; it offers solid performance, and is highly ergonomic (at least for my large hands). Given its large size and price, I would expect a little more oomph in terms of graphical capabilities, but that space seems to be more dedicated to heat dissipation than to boosting performance, which is in some ways a smart tradeoff. Regardless, the good overall gaming experience is countered by any interaction with the system outside of games; however, Windows may be a temporary curse on this device.

It consistently fell short of the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and the Asus ROG Ally X in our testing. However, the Legion Go S can still deliver a fun gaming experience on Medium or Low graphics, particularly in lightweight titles and indie games. So, the Legion Go S can be a good option for entry-level PC gamers or gamers who are looking for something under $800. With that said, though, you can get a significant bump in performance for only $70 more with the Asus ROG Ally X, so if you have a little bit more money to spend, it would be worth it.

But again, the Steam Deck does efficiency better. Simply limiting frame rate to 25fps and brightness to 40 percent can yield over eight hours of Balatro on the Deck, and I’ve gotten four hours, 42 minutes in Dave the Diver there. With the Legion Go S, my Dave only got 2.5 hours to hunt those sushi ingredients and blow up fake environmentalists! I am comfortable saying no one should buy the Windows version of the Lenovo Legion Go S, which costs $730 at Best Buy. Even if the performance, battery life, and price weren’t disqualifiers, Windows is a stain on this machine. And like other recent Windows handhelds I’ve tested, it does not reliably go to sleep and wake up again: I woke several mornings to find the system hot with fans spinning, even though I’d pressed the power button the previous evening.

The Windows-powered Legion Go S isn't a total bust from Lenovo. The display is great, and so are the speakers. There are also some nice software features, including fully customizable buttons. However, there are so many confusing choices here that ruin the experience: the quad-core Ryzen Z2 Go chipset leaves much to be desired, the whole thing is too heavy, there's no "gotta have it" feature, and poor hardware decisions (like the tiniest trackpad on Earth) make it cumbersome and mediocre to actually use. When you add in the sky-high asking price, it's hard for me to recommend this to anyone when more powerful and/or more user-friendly options exist for less cash.

Overall, the Lenovo Legion Go S is a very nice Windows gaming handheld. Here’s the bottom line, from my perspective. If your goal is to buy a Windows gaming handheld for Xbox gaming and Steam gaming, the Legion Go S competes with the rest of the pack in this way. It’s a little pricey, but it’s built well and has very nice features and specs, so the value is there. The question you need to ask yourself is. Do you want to find a slightly larger and heavier Legion Go and save some money? Or perhaps wait for the SteamOS version of this? Or just buy a SteamDeck? I can’t tell you what to do. All I can say is; I believe this Lenovo Legion Go S gives you value for the money.

But then I turned it on and I was faced with the frustration of using Windows on a handheld gaming PC. Of all the PC gaming handhelds I’ve tried, the Legion Go S comes closest to matching the feeling I got when first picking up a Steam Deck. Lenovo has nailed the shape of the system and the controls are fantastic. The tiny touchpad is my only real ergonomic irk. It has a bright, colourful screen, and using LCD tech instead of OLED is fine with me when it helps keep the price low enough to be a genuine alternative to Valve’s machine. The custom Ryzen silicon being a half-step behind the Steam Deck on performance isn’t a deal-breaker either, even if it does feel a tad mismatched to the 1200p display resolution. Battery life is pretty average too, but the biggest issue is that Windows is still a dud on small touchscreens.

Unfortunately, it’s a hard sell when you consider Lenovo will release a $599 Windows OS version, $499 SteamOS model, and a more powerful Z2 and/or Z2 Extreme configuration later this May. The Lenovo Legion Go S can be an excellent gaming handheld for the right price and configuration that will likely be released later this year. It offers fantastic ergonomics with extra comforts like adjustable triggers and a mini trackpad.
