But there are also a few big misses. I would like to see a more focused approach to multitasking on foldable phones, something that still feels underdeveloped. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks and feels very much like last year's version. Which is not a bad thing since the older model, which revamped the design, did get a lot of things right. So I can allow Google some slack for building on that design with some incremental upgrades for its latest foldable. But Google isn't the only player in this space. And boy, have foldable phones slimmed down considerably this year. In fact, they have never been thinner. We have arguably reached a point where the hardware and engineering issues for these devices have been mostly ironed out. So it's rather jarring that Google seems to have gone their own way with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which is actually a hair thicker and heavier than its predecessor. Now, I don't mind it being a bit thicker, but the weight (258g) can be a drag after a while, especially in my jeans pocket.

There's nothing really wrong with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold on its merits. Taken on its own, it's basically as good as last year's phone, but with a bigger battery and a stronger chip powering it. And at $1,799, its starting price is $200 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. For that price, we would expect cameras more on par with the Pixel 10 Pro, which starts at $999. But $200 is frankly not a huge number when you're talking about phones that cost around $2,000. If you're going to spend that much on a flagship foldable, you might as well go for Samsung's phone just because it's so much thinner and more comfortable to use. I hate to hinge so much of my criticism on the physical form factor, but with foldables, that's kind of a big deal. I think Samsung has the foldable to beat so far this year (rumor has it the company still has a tri-fold coming soon). We'll see how it shapes up in 2026.

While I'm impressed with the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold's overall offering, as its nips and tucks bring marginal gains over its predecessor, the key folding phone competitors have really put their foot on the gas during this past year. As a result, a once 5-star potential product can't, in my view, compete with the current best in the business – Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. Some will disagree, mind, as the Pixel's wider front display will seal the deal for some buyers – as the Samsung's is so much narrower that it's a very different experience. Google's foldable journey has been impressive: the original Fold really didn't hit the mark, while the second-gen model was a total reinvention that blew everyone away. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold hits plenty of high notes, but for its future to be secured it's going to need to slim down further and refine the screen bezel yet more. In the end, I think whether or not the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the right foldable for you will very much depend on what you value the most. Because I do believe there’s a space for it. Obviously, if you want bleeding-edge technology, in the thinnest, lightest design, this is not the one for you. But if you want a practical, reliable device that will survive the test of time, there’s an argument to be made that it’s the best of its kind on the market. It’s durable, water- and dust-resistant, features built-in Qi2 support, feels solid, and offers two great displays and a consistent camera experience. In the market of ambitious devices from Samsung and Honor, it’s a bit plain, but it is Mr. Reliable in a lot of ways. And, for me personally, it has the display I find most pleasant to watch out of all these types of devices.
