Test Lenovo ThinkPad W510

Lenovo W510 zalicza się do wąskiej elity notebooków przeznaczonych do pracy. Świetna jakość wykonania, bardzo dobra klawiatura, bogate wyposażenie w złącza i robiąca wrażenie matryca to cechy, jakich należało się spodziewać po przedstawicielu najdroższej grupy ThinkPadów. Na dodatek testowany egzemplarz otrzymał czterordzeniowy procesor i7-820QM i aż 16 GB RAM.

Obudowa

Lenovo ThinkPad W510 NTK3BPB164

Od lat te same czarne materiały wykończeniowe zamknięte w prostych kształtach są dla niektórych synonimem eleganckiej klasyki, dla innych zaś - „brzydkimi klocami”. Ale o gustach się nie dyskutuje. Pozornie W510 z wyglądu nie różni się od innych ThinkPadów. Wprawne oko dostrzeże jednak, że obudowa - dzielona z testowanym już T510 - została poddana w stosunku do poprzednika (W500) szeregowi modyfikacji.

Ze świetnie trzymającej się ręki klapy znikł zamek zwalniający zatrzask przytrzymujący wieko (znajduje się on teraz na jednostce zasadniczej). Wciąż obecny jest charakterystyczny, podobny do muszli małża (Clamshell) nawis nad ekranem, który ma chronić środek laptopa podczas transportu. W jeszcze zamkniętym laptopie widać kompletnie zmienione rozplanowanie portów komunikacyjnych. Po otwarciu komputera wita nas przeprojektowany pulpit, z przesuniętymi na boki klawiatury głośnikami i mniejszą liczbą diod informacyjnych. W W510 jest on wykonany z jednego kawałka tworzywa. Pulpit gości odnowione urządzenia sterujące. To wszystko oczywiście w nowym, bardziej „jamnikowatym” formacie 16:9.

Niezmienna pozostaje świetna jakość wykonania. Wykorzystanie w konstrukcji – oprócz dobrej jakości tworzyw – na dużą skalę metali daje w efekcie zjawiskowo sztywną klapę, stabilny pulpit i niewrażliwy na nacisk spód. Ten ostatni oprócz zatrzasku baterii i portu stacji dokującej daje również dostęp do dwóch z czterech (sic!) gniazd pamięci RAM, dysku twardego oraz sprytnego mechanizmu, który pozwala na wyciągnięcie bez narzędzi napędu DVD z zatoki UltraBay. Po wyjęciu akumulatora można zauważyć gniazdo na kartę SIM, ale w testowanym egzemplarzu nie był do niego podłączony modem Internetu mobilnego.

Ciężko chodzące zawiasy zmuszają do użycia obu rąk przy otwieraniu laptopa. Zapewniają też odpowiednie trzymanie klapy nawet przy maksymalnym jej odchyleniu, które przekracza 180 stopni. Solidność przegubów powinna się przydać również ze względu na możliwość dokupienia ekranu dotykowego.

Wyposażenie w złącza idzie z duchem czasu. Znikła zatoczka PCMCIA, a pojawiły się dwie sztuki USB w wersji 3.0 i eSATA. Większość portów została upchnięta po lewej stronie, co z pewnością nie ucieszy osób leworęcznych. W pewnym stopniu to konsekwencja pustego frontu (tylko rygiel) i charakterystycznych dla ThinkPadów, podwójnych kratek wentylacyjnych (z lewej i z tyłu). Poza baterią na rufie laptopa znalazło się miejsce tylko na gniazda: zasilania, modemu i jedno USB.

Osprzęt

Znana z innych nowych ThinkPadów klawiatura o pomniejszonych odstępach między płytkami nie zaskakuje. Charakterystyczny rozkład klawiszy wymaga chwili przyzwyczajenia, ale potem docenia się np. łatwość, z jaką włącza się lampkę oświetlającą klawiaturę. Należy w tym celu wcisnąć znajdujący się w samym lewym dolnym rogu klawisz Fn razem z klawiszem po prawej stronie w rogu górnym. Niektórzy mogą kręcić nosem na brak wyodrębnionego bloku numerycznego. Choć pewnie nie chcieliby, aby pojawił się on kosztem pewnego osadzenia klawiatury. A w tym elemencie jak zwykle nie można biznesowemu Lenovo właściwie nic zarzucić.  Lekko wyprofilowane klawisze są bardzo stabilne i pracują z odpowiednio długim i dobrze wyczuwalnym skokiem.

Do kontroli nad kursorem można wybrać jedno z dwóch wysokiej jakości urządzeń: albo gładzik z obsługą gestów, albo wtopiony w klawiaturę trackpoint. To drugie rozwiązanie wydaje się wykazywać wyższą sprawnością sterowania na matrycy o wysokiej rozdzielczości i dysponuje dodatkowym (trzecim) klawiszem.

Na wyposażeniu jest też oczywiście czytnik linii papilarnych.

Można narzekać na panujące obecnie proporcje matrycy 16:9, które niezbyt pomagają w pracy. Jest to jednak z nawiązką rekompensowane przez rozdzielczość 1920x1080 (FullHD). Przestrzeń robocza jest naprawdę duża. Jednak przy rozmiarze 15,6 cala owocuje to maluteńkimi czcionkami i ikonkami. Osoby o słabszym wzroku mogłoby to męczyć. Codzienne użytkowanie mogą ułatwić całkiem nieźle sprawdzające się opcje skalowania dostępne zarówno w systemie operacyjnym jak i w oprogramowaniu (np. przeglądarkach internetowych).

Rozmiary ThinkPada W510 sprawiają, że można myśleć o wykorzystaniu go w bardziej mobilny sposób. W terenie doceniona zostanie półmatowa powłoka matrycy, która zmiękcza słoneczne refleksy i pozbawia ekran funkcji lustra. W silnym słońcu w sukurs przychodzi jej wysoka jasność maksymalna (na poziomie średnio aż 266 cd/m²). Dobrze wypada także równomierność rozświetlenia o wartości 82%.

Lenovo chwali się gamutem 95% i trzeba przyznać, że rozpiętość palety barw robi wrażenie nie tylko na wykresie. Przy przesiadce z typowego ekranu żywe kolory wymagają przyzwyczajenia i zaakceptowania faktu, że nie są przesadzone. Bardzo solidnie wypadają też odwzorowanie czarni i kontrast.

Kąty widzenia sprawiają wrażenie ponadstandardowych zwłaszcza w pionie. Możliwe jednak, iż ma to związek z tym, że po prostu dłużej akceptujemy utratę bardzo mocnych na początku kolorów.

Osiągi

Według polskiej strony Lenovo, wszystkie dostępne u nas wersje W510 są wyposażone w 4-rdzeniowe procesory i7 QM. Testowany egzemplarz miał zamontowany Intel Core i7-820QM. Cztery rdzenie, osiem wątków (dzięki funkcji Hyper-Threading) i taktowanie bazowe 1,73 GHz robią dobre wrażenie. A gdy wymienić  tryb Turbo Boost, w którym zegary rosną nawet do 3,06 GHz, 8 MB pamięci podręcznej Intel Smart Cache i pełną obsługę pamięci DDR3-1333, jest jeszcze ciekawiej. Niektórym użytkownikom może brakować tylko funkcji AES.

Procesor osiągający dla przykładu w teście 3DMark06 ponad 3000 punktów,  a w Cinebench 64bit Multi ponad 10000 punktów, jest obecnie jedną z najwydajniejszych jednostek przeznaczonych do komputerów przenośnych.

Wydaje się, że aplikacje sprawdzające wydajność systemu nie są jeszcze w stanie wykorzystać 16 GB pamięci operacyjnej, które były dostępne w  testowej konfiguracji. W praktyce jednak znajdą się już zadania, które będą w stanie ją wykorzystać.

Karta graficzna Nvidia Quadro FX 880M to przeznaczona dla inżynierów wersja układu, na którym bazują również GeForce GT 240M, Quadro NVS 5100M i - w trochę odświeżonej (podkręconej) wersji - GF GT 330M. Przy taktowaniu 550/790 MHz (rdzeń/pamięć) i 48 jednostkach cieniujących, ten wykonany w litografii 40 nm chip lokuje się w wysokich rejonach średniego przedziału wydajnościowego. Wykonany w rozdzielczości 1280x1024 test 3DMark06 dał spodziewany rezultat 6366 punktów. Jednak to, co wyróżnia karty FX, to pełen zestaw certyfikatów, który potwierdza kompatybilność z profesjonalnym oprogramowaniem do tworzenia grafiki 3D typu CAD itp. W niektórych przypadkach zwiększa też jego wydajność.

Pomimo że nie to jest jej przeznaczeniem, Quadro FX 880M jak najbardziej nadaje się do gier. Nowe tytuły będą jednak miały problem z zachowaniem płynności w wysokiej rozdzielczości natywnej.

Wpływ na otoczenie

Hałas

Po włączeniu notebooka bezustannie towarzyszy nam szum wentylatora. W stanie spoczynku synchronizuje się on z dyskiem twardym w raczej umiarkowanych granicach około 33-34 dB. Hałas rośnie wraz ze wzrostem obciążenia, ale można się było tego spodziewać. Osiągnięta najwyższa wartość (41 dB) jest już wyraźnie słyszalna, ale regularny szum nie męczy i można się do niego przyzwyczaić.

Jeśli chodzi o DVD, to podejrzewam, że prawie wszystkie laptopy serii ThinkPad mają awersję do mojej płyty testowej. Napęd nie potrafił się uspokoić i w trakcie projekcji filmu prawie bezustannie bzyczał, generując hałas o natężeniu nieco ponad 45 decybeli, co skutecznie uprzykrzało seans.

Zaobserwowałem również kilka razy popiskiwanie (a może raczej skwierczenie) dochodzące z wnętrza obudowy w trakcie niektórych benchmarków, np. 3DMark. Dźwięki te były jednak raczej ciche i krótkie, urywane.

Ciepło

Spokojnie używany Lenovo ThinkPad W510 jest właściwie zimny. Tylko w pewnych miejscach podstawy jego temperatura przekracza 30 stopni Celsjusza. W tym samym czasie wskazania czujników przy podzespołach nie przekraczają 50°C.

Wydajna konfiguracja umieszczona w niewielkiej obudowie przypomina jednak o sobie po włączeniu wyciskających siódme poty z podzespołów programów Prime95 i FurMark. Lewa strona nagrzewa się wyraźnie, po godzinie testów osiągając z wierzchu w okolicach głośnika 44,2°C. Na spodzie wyraźnie nagrzewa się prawie cała lewa strona, ale znów najwyższa temperatura – prawie 50°C – mierzona jest w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie wylotu wentylacji, który wyrzuca z siebie w tym czasie gorące powietrze. Nie jest wtedy wskazane trzymanie laptopa na kolanach.

Zarówno procesor i grafika przekraczają w stresie 90°C. Wydaje się, że właśnie z temperaturami związane jest zjawisko okresowego dławienia procesora, które zaczęło występować po pół godziny wygrzewania. Być może dodatkowy, szybszy tryb pracy wentylatora mógłby temu zapobiec. Pozostaje mi tylko nadmienić, że w bardziej praktycznych warunkach, takich jak  gry i benchmarki, ani przez chwilę nie zauważyłem spadku wydajności.

Głośniki

Nagłośnienie Lenovo prezentuje poziom typowy dla laptopów biznesowych. Głośniczki grają czysto i dosyć donośnie. Nie należy od nich oczekiwać wybitnej jakości dźwięku, bo nie to jest kluczowe w tego typu laptopie.

Wydajność akumulatora

Przede wszystkim czterordzeniowy procesor, ale też wydajna karta graficzna, matryca w wysokiej rozdzielczości itd. sprawiają, że praca na baterii (o pojemności 57 Wh) jest słabą stroną ThinkPada W510. Widać nawet pewien regres w stosunku do poprzednika, który miał możliwość przełączenia grafiki na układ zintegrowany.

Trzy i pół godziny jako najdłuższy przebieg nie brzmią może najgorzej, ale trzeba pamiętać, że laptop właściwie nic wtedy nie robi. Bardziej praktyczne sprawdziany - korzystania z WiFi i odtwarzania DVD - zakończyły się w okolicach półtorej godziny. W teście Battery Eater Classic W510 wytrzymał prawie równe 50 minut.

Jeśli więc testowana stacja robocza Lenovo będzie często używana poza biurkiem, warto rozważyć zakup większej lub dodatkowej baterii.
