Charakterystyczny wygląd nowego ProBooka znany jest z modelu 6540b. Niezbyt smukłą w rzeczywistości sylwetkę ożywia wplecenie w typową nudną czerń sporej liczby srebrnych akcentów. Taki kolor ma np. cała klapa z chromowanym logo HP w centralnym punkcie.  
 
Cieszy umieszczenie w obudowie wyświetlacza rzadko ostatnio stosowanego mechanizmu zatrzaskowego. Będzie to z pewnością miało pozytywny wpływ na bezpieczeństwo notebooka podczas transportu. Otwarcie go ukazuje również srebrny pulpit, z czarną klawiaturą oddzielającą panel multimedialny od podkładki pod nadgarstki. Zestawienie kolorystyczne użytych materiałów wykończeniowych prezentuje się naprawdę atrakcyjnie, a dodatkową zaletą jest matowość ich powierzchni. Czyni je to łatwymi do utrzymania w czystości.

Całkiem nieźle prezentuje się solidność konstrukcji. Wieko ugina się tylko nieznacznie i bez jakichkolwiek konsekwencji dla wyświetlanego obrazu. Bardzo dobrze osadzona jest także ramka matrycy. Metalowe zawiasy dobrze spełniając funkcję, zarówno pozwalając na manewrowanie ekranem jedną ręką, jak i ograniczając jego chybotanie. Umożliwiają one prawie płaskie ułożenie ekranu (kąt maksymalnego rozwarcia to ponad 170 stopni).  
 
Trochę gorzej wypada jednostka zasadnicza. Przenoszony laptop nie skrzypi, ale pulpit, choć nieznacznie, to ugina się jednak w miejscu oparcia nadgarstków i na środku pod ekranem. Również do ogólnie sztywnego spodu można mieć kilka zastrzeżeń. Tradycyjnie trochę słabsze są okolice napędu optycznego. Klekoczący w gnieździe akumulator nie powinien zbytnio irytować, gdyż nie umieszczono na nim nóżek . Być może jego luz ma związek z tym, że dookoła baterii koncentrują się magnezowe wzmocnienia korpusu.

Warto się zatrzymać na chwilę nad opisem samej podstawy. Wśród obecnych na niej klapek, ta od RAM pozwala na dostęp tylko do jednego gniazda (drugie jest ukryte pod klawiaturą). Pod baterią kryje się gniazdo na kartę SIM, jednak w testowej konfiguracji modem 3G należałoby zamontować we własnym zakresie. Wreszcie – przechodząc już trochę do tematu dostępnych złączy – spód oferuje nie tylko port stacji dokującej, ale i dla opcjonalnej dodatkowej baterii.

Rozmieszczenie złączy wypada uznać za wręcz wzorcowe. Konstrukcja ProBooka 6550b pozwala na ulokowanie gniazd na tylnej ściance, co zostało skrupulatnie wykorzystane. Wyekspediowano tam interfejsy sieciowe, gniazda: zasilania i VGA (co zawsze godne podkreślenia, z możliwością przykręcenia wtyczki). Prawa strona to umieszczone za napędem optycznym FireWire, USB, czytnik kart i biały kruk - port COM (RS232), który wciąż jest wykorzystywany przez niektóre urządzenia i dla osób potrzebujących go w pracy może być czynnikiem decydującym o zakupie tego laptopa. Na lewej flance  – obok ExpressCard/54, wejścia i wyjścia dźwięku i portów USB  – znalazło się gniazdo eSATA, którego brakowało w poprzednim modelu ProBooka. Obecny jest też DisplayPort, a osobom narzekającym na brak HDMI przypomnę, że właścicieli dużych monitorów ucieszy obsługa przez DP większych rozdzielczości (do 2560x1600).

Osprzęt

Specyficznie pracująca klawiatura nie przypadła mi do gustu. Charakterystyka pracy dużych, ale płaskich i chropowatych płytek przypomina mi tzw. klawiatury wyspowe. Skok klawisza jest krótki i kończy się w twardy, niezbyt sygnalizowany sposób.

Urządzenie to ma jednak również parę zalet. Na świetnie osadzonej, nieuginającej się powierzchni udało się zmieścić blok numeryczny. Rozplanowanie pozostałych klawiszy, poza małymi "strzałkami" nie daje powodów do narzekania. Stabilnie zamontowane klawisze produkują też bardzo ograniczony hałas.

Przyjemny w dotyku konserwatywny gładzik pokazuje, że świetna czułość i precyzja sterowania są w stanie zrekompensować brak wymyślnych funkcji czy ogromnej powierzchni.  Przy  okazji jest wyraźnie odgraniczony od pulpitu niższym osadzeniem i innym kolorem. Gorzej wypadają jego klawisze, które pracują lekko, ale nie do końca cicho. W testowanym egzemplarzu lewy przycisk był wyraźnie krzywo zamontowany.

Panel multimedialny za klawiaturą sprawuje się bardzo dobrze, choć nie każdemu musi przypaść do gustu jego kolorowy wystrój.

Na naszym forum pojawiają się od czasu o czasu pytania o laptop w przyzwoitej cenie i z dobrej jakości ekranem, np. dla fotografa. Matryca 15,6” produkcji LG (LGD0258 / LP156WD1-TLD3) o podwyższonej rozdzielczości 1600 x 900 pikseli, zdecydowanie należy do wyróżniających się konstrukcji. Oprócz dużego obszaru roboczego cieszy półmatowa powierzchnia panelu, która ogranicza wpływ zewnętrznych źródeł światła na prezentowany obraz.

Przejdźmy teraz do wyników pomiarów kalibratora. Dobra wartość jasności maksymalnej (wynosząca średnio 204,2 cd/m²) potwierdza zalety podświetlenia diodami LED. Naprawdę nieźle wypada także równomierność rozświetlenia (83 %). Rewelacyjnie jak na technologię TN wypadł pomiar czerni na poziomie 0,3 cd/m² – ciemne tła wyglądają w porównaniu do innych laptopów naprawdę przyzwoicie. W ślad za tym idzie stosunkowo wysoki poziom kontrastu, sprawiający, że obraz jest naprawdę żywy.

Mimo pozytywnych subiektywnych odczuć, paleta barw nie wyróżnia się niczym szczególnym. Widoczna jest jedna z typowych przypadłości obrazu w laptopach, czyli lekka dominacja koloru niebieskiego, co widać np. pod postacią chłodnej, trochę zaniebieszczonej bieli. Poziom natężenia tego problemu nie wydał mi się jednak dyskwalifikujący.

Szczodre kąty widzenia w poziomie idą w parze z ograniczoną widocznością w pionie. Jednak i tu inwersja czy zaciemnienie obrazu pojawiają się później niż zazwyczaj, zwłaszcza gdy przechylamy ekran do siebie.

Osiągi

Odświeżony ProBook załapał się na jeden z procesorów, które poszerzyły ofertę Intela w czerwcu tego roku. Dwurdzeniowy Core i5-450M to podkręcona wersja i5-430M. Obecnie jednostka centralna jest taktowana w zakresie od 2,40 GHz do 2,66 GHz (w trybie Turbo). Bez zmian pozostają pamięć L3 (3 MB), TDP (35 W), czy obsługa Hyper-Threading (czyli możliwość rachowania czterech wątków jednocześnie). Podwyższone zegary pozwalają i5-450M konkurować w niektórych zastosowaniach z wyższym modelem Core i5-520M.

Na pierwszy rzut oka nowa karta graficzna ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v, to w rzeczywistości tylko nowa nazwa dla Radeona 4550. Przypomnijmy więc: taktowanie – 550 MHz rdzeń, 800 MHz pamięć, DirectX 10.1 i 512 MB pamięci GDDR3 na 64-bitowej szynie. Nieco wyższe wyniki w testach 3DMark w stosunku do testu ProBooka 6540b można łatwo wytłumaczyć nowszymi sterownikami i szybszym procesorem oraz być może większą pamięcią operacyjną. Nie jest to mocna karta, ale w razie czego radzi sobie z grafiką dwukrotnie lepiej niż zintegrowany Intel GMA HD.

Dysk Hitachi o pojemności 500 GB pod względem transferów dotrzymuje kroku popularnym w segmencie biznesowym rozwiązaniom Seagate.

Na przykład podczas gier do użytkownika dociera wyraźny szum o wartości 39,5 dB, co jest już wyraźnie słyszalne. Jednak właściwie przez cały test ekstremalny laptop wydawał z siebie dźwięki o jeszcze większym natężeniu (44,1 dB). Ciepło

Tutaj należy odnotować zdecydowany plus. W trybie jałowym laptop jest wręcz zimny i tylko na spodzie przekracza nieznacznie 30°C. Głośno ale wydajnie pracujące chłodzenie pozwala nie rezygnować z trzymania laptopa na kolanach nawet przy pełnym obciążeniu podzespołów, a temperatury powyżej 40°C występowały na bardzo ograniczonej powierzchni.

Okazuje się więc, że użytkownik jest dobrze izolowany od osiągającej maksymalnie 92°C karty graficznej, czy o około 10 stopni chłodniejszego procesora.

Głośniki

Lokalizacja pod podpórką pod nadgarstki nie jest optymalna. Zestaw stereo gra w miarę czysto i wystarczająco donośnie. Lekko metaliczny dźwięk nie nada się jednak raczej do zastosowań multimedialnych.

Wydajność akumulatora

I na tym polu nie doszło do zmian, zwłaszcza że wciąż nie jest dostępne przełączanie kart graficznych. 6 komór i 55 Wh wystarcza zależnie od sposobu użytkowania i planu zasilania na ponad godzinę wytężonej pracy, trzy godziny przeglądania Internetu, dwugodzinny film z DVD albo pięć godzin w trybie oszczędnym. Wyniki te są przyzwoite, a w odwodzie jest możliwość podpięcia od spodu wspomnianego już dodatkowego akumulatora.

Po swoim poprzedniku – 6540b – testowany HP dziedziczy szereg innych zalet i wad, z przewagą tych pierwszych.
