Test Asus PL80JT

Asus PL80JT reprezentuje co prawda inną serię laptopów, ale w rzeczywistości jest odpowiednikiem modelu UL80JT, tyle że wyposażonym w matową matrycę. W poniższym artykule, który jest zasadniczo charakterystyką tego pierwszego, omówione zostały także główne różnice między notebookami z tych serii. Ich wspólną zaletą są długie czasy pracy na akumulatorze możliwe dzięki zastosowaniu niskonapięciowego procesora, możliwości przełączania układów graficznych (Nvidia Optimus) oraz dużej pojemności samej baterii.

Zamknięty laptop wygląda jak Asus UL. Jest to charakterystyczna w kształcie, zgrabna bryła z czarnego tworzywa, przykryta wiekiem ze szczotkowanego aluminium. Dopiero podniesienie wyświetlacza przypomina, że seria PL, do której należy testowany egzemplarz, jest skierowana do bardziej wymagających użytkowników biznesowych.  

Oprócz matowej matrycy rzuca się w oczy wykończenie pulpitu. Nadgarstki spoczywają nie na plastiku, a na aluminium, okalający zaś klawiaturę szarawy materiał przypomina gumę i zapewnia świetny chwyt. Pod ekranem została w nim zatopiona metalowa listewka, która na swych końcach skrywa dyskretnie podświetlone przyciski: po lewej ExpressGate, a po prawej wyłącznik systemowy. Niestety umieszczone przed gładzikiem diody świecą już bardzo mocno, co może irytować zwłaszcza w nocy.

Prawdopodobnie w ramach cięcia kosztów nie dokonano zmian względem modeli UL w wystroju ramki matrycy, części baterii i kratki między klawiszami. Czarny, błyszczący plastik jest bardzo podatny nie tylko na kurz i ślady palców, ale i zarysowania. Nie pasuje to do profesjonalnego charakteru notebooka.

Zwiększenie użycia metalu w konstrukcji wpływa pozytywnie na stabilność jednostki zasadniczej. Poza jak zawsze newralgicznymi okolicami napędu optycznego, ciężko znaleźć miejsce ulegające naciskowi. Do uszu nie dobiega też skrzypienie, gdy manewrujemy komputerem trzymanym jedną ręką. Przeszkadza tylko klekoczący w swoim gnieździe akumulator, mimo że sposób jego wkładania nie jest prosty i wymaga przyzwyczajenia.  

Po raz kolejny wypada też przyjąć z uznaniem poziom solidności cienkiego wieka. Przytrzymujące je zawiasy nie skrzypią, ale też nie są w stanie w zupełności stłumić chybotania spowodowanego wstrząsami. Możliwe jest uzyskanie otwarcia o kąt dochodzący prawie do 140 stopni.  

W urządzeniu biznesowym należałoby się spodziewać większej liczby portów. Na próżno szukać na obudowie złączy ExpressCard, eSATA czy stacji dokującej, a powinno być obecne przynajmniej jedno z nich.

Osprzęt

Tym razem w loterii, jaką jest jakość klawiatury w poszczególnych egzemplarzach ultramobilnych jednostek Asusa, trafiło się bardzo słabe urządzenie. Wyraźnym ugięciom właściwie całej powierzchni towarzyszą lekko chwiejne klawisze, które chrzęszczą niemile w trakcie pisania. Warto jednak pamiętać, że same klawisze mają spore rozmiary i przyzwoity rozkład, a wyraźne odstępy między nimi (układ wyspowy) pozwalają unikać literówek. Niektórych użytkowników ucieszy niezbyt powszechny skrót klawiaturowy Fn + F7, który powoduje wyłączenie matrycy.

Gładzik PL80JT nie jest może tak duży jak w U30JC, ale jego wyraźnie wyodrębniona, aluminiowa powierzchnia spisuje się wyraźnie lepiej, niż perforowane płytki w „ULkach”. Szerszej wzmianki domagają się jego klawisze. Przede wszystkim, mimo cichej pracy, ich skok jest nieprzyjemnie krótki. Poza tym, w miejscu zetknięcia z płytką dotykową między klawisze został wciśnięty czytnik linii papilarnych. Powoduje to powstanie martwej strefy niereagującej na nacisk. Pozostała dostępna powierzchnia klawiszy jest jednak wystarczająco obszerna do ich bezproblemowego używania .

Sam czytnik działa bardzo sprawnie i pomimo jego lokalizacji nie zdarza się, że przypadkowym uruchomieniem przeszkadza w obcowaniu z komputerem.

W pudełku z dostarczonym mi egzemplarzem znalazły się również schludna firmowa torba oraz głęboko ukryta w kartonie mała myszka, o wykończeniu równie błyszczącym jak ramka matrycy.

Wielu potencjalnych nabywców smukłych Asusów przed dokonaniem zakupu powstrzymuje ograniczająca komfort pracy na świeżym powietrzu błyszcząca matryca. Niewielkie partie starszych modeli z warstwą antyrefleksyjną cieszyły się dużym zainteresowaniem. Informacja o w pełni matowym ekranie na wyposażeniu PL80JT powinna więc cieszyć.

Wyświetlacz o standardowych parametrach – rozdzielczość 1366x768 i proporcje 16:9 – wyprodukowało AUO. Ten podświetlany diodami LED panel oferuje przyzwoitą jakość. Przeciętna jasność maksymalna wyniosła co prawda tylko 189,5 cd/m², ale równomierność podświetlenia jest niezła. Paleta barw, kontrast czy kąty widzenia nie zachwycają, jednakże laptopy zdążyły już nas przyzwyczaić do takich niewygórowanych standardów.

Osiągi

Tak jak niedawno testowany przeze mnie UL30JT, PL80JT jest wyposażony w  procesor Intel Core i5-520 w wersji UM, czyli niskonapięciowej.  

Posiadając wszystkie cechy typowe dla jednostek Arrandale (proces technologiczny 32 nm, Hyper-Threading, zintegrowany kontroler pamięci i układ graficzny) i funkcje Core i5-520M o standardowym napięciu (Turbo Boost, wsparcie wirtualizacji w wersji VT-d, AES, itd.), ma on mniejsze zapotrzebowanie na energię – 18 W, ale i niższą wydajność.

Z tym ostatnim elementem nie jest jednak tak źle, a na pewno zdecydowanie lepiej, niż w niskonapięciowych procesorach Core 2 Duo. Dzięki autorskiej technologii Asusa, Turbo33, po podkręceniu o 33% możliwe jest uzyskanie osiągów konkurencyjnych w stosunku do Core i3, czyli najsłabszych jednostek o normalnym napięciu. Taktowanie rośnie wtedy ze standardowych 1,07 GHz (mogącego wzrastać w zależności od potrzeb do 1,87 GHz) do wartości rzędu 1,42-2,48 GHz.

Procesor UM sprawia też, że zainstalowane pamięci DDR3-1333 pracują z częstotliwością 800 MHz.

Dzięki technologii Nvidia Optimus, system bez wiedzy użytkownika i w sposób dla niego nieodczuwalny przełącza się pomiędzy zintegrowanym w procesorze rdzeniem graficznym GMA HD, a GeForce'em 310M. Jest to dobry pomysł na oszczędzanie energii bez poświęcania wydajności dla osób, które nie są zbyt biegłe w obsłudze komputera. Stają się one jednak bezradne, gdy jakaś gra albo program nie potrafi poprawnie współpracować z tą nowinką. Wraz z kolejnymi wersjami sterowników Nvidii rośnie jednak liczebność obsługiwanego oprogramowania. GF 310M nie jest może nazbyt wydajną kartą graficzną, ale wystarczy, by jako tako wyświetlić gry, które na grafice Intela w ogóle odmówiłyby współpracy.

Dysk twardy 5400 obr/min od Seagate ma dużą pojemność (500 GB) i przeciętną wydajność. Zainstalowany jest system operacyjny w wersji Professional, co jednoznacznie wskazuje charakter komputera. Transfery dysku są jednak spowalniane przez prawie dokładnie taki sam pakiet oprogramowania jak w konsumenckich modelach UL. Oprócz mniej lub bardziej przydatnych programów narzędziowych należą do niego również np. zupełnie bezużyteczne gry. W imię wydajności warto zrobić porządek z tym bałaganem.

Wpływ na otoczenie

Hałas

Podczas zwykłej codziennej pracy Asus PL80JT nie będzie niepokoił właściciela nadmiernym hałasem. Zdecydowanie zaznaczające swoją obecność dźwięki pojawią się dopiero przy bardziej wymagających zastosowaniach, np. w czasie gry. Odnotowany poziom hałasu wynosi wtedy prawie 39 dB. Naprawdę głośno było tylko w trakcie godzinnych testów obciążeniowych. Powietrze wyrzucane z układu chłodzenia zakłócało wtedy spokój z siłą 41,1 do nawet 43,7 dB.

Gdy już myślałem, że przekazanego mi egzemplarza ten problem nie dotyczy, ujawniło się  wewnątrz obudowy piszczenie. Ten charakterystyczny dźwięk o wysokim tonie w cichym otoczeniu potrafi zepsuć nerwy niejednemu użytkownikowi.

Ciepło

Wiedząc już, że Asusy dysponują wydajnym chłodzeniem, postanowiłem przetestować PL80 w naprawdę ciężkich warunkach. W temperaturze otoczenia około 27 stopni Celsjusza poradził on sobie bardzo dobrze, tylko na niewielkim obszarze (tylny lewy narożnik na spodzie obudowy) rozgrzewając się do 45,5°C, a w ścisłych okolicach wylotu powietrza na lewej flance - nawet mocniej. Pozostała część korpusu, z wyjątkiem gładzika, nie przekroczyła 40°C.

Nie męczony programami testowymi, a tylko upalną pogodą, Asus utrzymywał temperatury o kilka stopni niższe od poziomu ciepłoty ludzkiego ciała. Temperatura obudowy jest w pewnym stopniu zależna od trybu pracy procesora, rosnąc trochę przy aktywowanym podkręceniu funkcją Asus Turbo33.

W tym elemencie PL80JT nie sprawia niespodzianki, oferując poprawną czystość i moc dźwięku. Muzyce brakować będzie jednak basu i kilku innych przymiotów, których nie jest w stanie zapewnić ograniczony rozmiarami laptopa układ głośnikowy.

Wydajność akumulatora

Z nowym, wydajniejszym procesorem nie udało się już uzyskać kilkunastogodzinnych wyników w testach baterii (akumulator PL80JT ma pojemność 84 Wh). Jednak od trzech do prawie dziewięciu godzin pracy (w zależności od sposobu używania) to wciąż wyróżniające się osiągi. Wiele innych laptopów może tylko pomarzyć o zaoferowaniu możliwości przeglądania Internetu przez sześć godzin z dala od gniazdka. Jeśli nie jest potrzebna maksymalna wydajność, nie należy uruchamiać w niepodpiętym do prądu laptopie trybu Turbo33, gdyż będzie to skutkować skróceniem wymienionych powyżej czasów o około godzinę.

Do udanej konstrukcji  serii Unlimited Asus dodał w modelu PL80JT kilka podnoszących jego użyteczność elementów. Najważniejszy jest tu fakt zamontowania matowej matrycy, co eliminuje nieprzyjemne refleksy. Nie do pogardzenia są również: system operacyjny w wersji Professional, czytnik linii papilarnych czy poprawione wykończenie pulpitu. Szkoda tylko, że nie posunięto się jeszcze o krok czy dwa dalej, rozszerzając wachlarz dostępnych złączy czy zupełnie rezygnując z błyszczących elementów obudowy.

Zalety, takie jak oszczędne gospodarowanie energią z pojemnego akumulatora czy żwawy procesor potrafiący się w niebywały wręcz sposób dostosować do bieżących potrzeb, znane były już wcześniej. Niestety dotyczy to również felerów takich jak klekocząca w swym gnieździe bateria czy marna jakość montażu klawiatury.
